Sacha Inchi, a plant belonging in the Euphorbraceae family, with the scientific name of Plukenetia volubilis L., is also called Inca Inchi or mountain peanut. The Sacha Inchi seed is an original, ancient seed found in the Amazon rainforests of Peru. Sacha Inchi pottery was found in ancient tombs of the Mochita and Chimu eras, which have existed for 3,000-5,000 years.
Hailed as the 'King of Longevity Fruits', Sacha Inchi seeds contain about 35% oil, 27% whole protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre and dozens of antioxidants. It is especially rich in the essential fatty acids Omega-3 and Omega-6.

As early as 1609, the robust taste and therapeutic effects of Sacha Inchi oil were recorded by the Peruvian journalist Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616) in his literary, historical work entitled 'Comentarios Reales de los Incas'.
In January 2013, the European Commission approved Sacha Inchi oil as a Novel Food. Due to its high Omega-3 fatty acid content and perfect combination of nutrients, it has rapidly become a world-recognized healthy vegetable oil as well as a reputable Superfood.
In October 2014, The USFDA (US Food & Drug Authority) approved Sacha Inchi oil as an 'acknowledged safe food' (GRAS).

In 2014, 18 adult test volunteers in Peru were given a single oral dose of Sacha Inchi oil and had their blood fatty acid levels tested.
The Omega-3/Omega-6 ratio in Sacha Inchi oil is 1.37. Result: upon taking 15ml of Sacha Inchi oil, the maximum ALA concentration in blood reached 2.84±0.36mg/ml, and that of DHA, 2.60±0.84 mg/ml in 2 hours (Gonzales et al.,2014).
An animal study concludes that Sacha Inchi oil, rich in Omega-3, readily elevates DHA level in the liver, small intestines and brain tissues, as well as EPA level in red blood cells, the liver, kidney, small intestines, the heart and quadriceps (Valenzuela et al., 2014).
